Types of Residence Status 2026 (Work, Study & Permanent Visa Guide)

To stay in Japan you need a residence status (visa) that matches your purpose. The scope of work allowed differs greatly by type.

① Work-based Statuses (job-type restricted)

③ Student & Dependent

  • Student: University, vocational school, etc. Part-time work up to 28 hours/week with a work permit
  • Dependent: Family of a worker. Part-time work up to 28 hours/week with a work permit

④ Requirements for Permanent Residency

  • 10+ years of continuous residence (5+ years working)
  • Good conduct
  • Ability to support yourself financially
  • No unpaid taxes or social insurance premiums

FAQ

Q: What happens to my status if I change jobs?Changing to the same job type is generally fine. If the job type changes significantly, you must apply to change your residence status.
Q: Can the PR application period be shortened?Under the Highly Skilled Professional points system, 70+ points allows applying in as little as 1 year, and 80+ points in as little as 6 months.
Q: What is the difference between SSW (i) and (ii)?SSW (i) lasts up to 5 years with no family accompaniment. SSW (ii) is renewable with no time limit and allows family accompaniment, but requires passing a separate exam.
