Complete Guide to Renewing Your Residence Status in Japan

Published 2026.06.04 ・ Updated 2026.06.05 | MRI Co., Ltd. — Zainichi Life Navi Editorial Team

Renewing your residence status (visa) lets you keep living in Japan under the same status. If your period of stay expires, you become an illegal overstayer and may be subject to deportation, so apply early.

① When Can You Apply?

You can apply from roughly 3 months before your period of stay expires (if you hold a stay period of 6 months or more). Offices are crowded close to the deadline, so applying 2–3 months ahead is recommended.

💡 What is the "special period"?If you apply by the expiry date, you can keep your current status and continue working until a decision is made (or for up to 2 months after expiry, whichever comes first). Carry the application receipt you are given.

② Where to Apply

Apply at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau (or branch/office) that covers your address. Certain statuses can also apply via the Online Residence Application System.

③ Required Documents

Documents vary by status, but the following are common to all:

  • Application for extension of period of stay
  • Passport photo (4cm × 3cm, taken within 3 months; not required for some work statuses)
  • Passport and Residence Card (to present)

Main additional documents by status

StatusExamples of additional documents
Work (e.g. Engineer/Humanities/Int'l Services)Certificate of employment; resident tax payment/taxation certificates
StudentEnrollment certificate, transcript, attendance records
DependentCopy of the supporter's Residence Card; proof of occupation/income

④ Fees

You pay the fee when your renewal is approved. From April 1, 2025 the fee is ¥6,000 (revenue stamp) for an in-person extension and ¥5,500 for an online application (previously ¥4,000).

⚠️ Note on future increasesFees may be revised again. Check the Immigration Services Agency for the latest amounts before applying. Revenue stamps can be bought at immigration counters and post offices.

⑤ How Long Does the Review Take?

The standard review takes about 2 weeks to 1 month. It can take longer if you are asked to submit additional documents. You are notified by postcard (or email) and pay the fee when you collect your new Residence Card.

⑥ Points to Watch When Renewing

  • Even one day past expiry counts as overstaying — always apply before the deadline.
  • If your address or employer has changed, file the required notifications beforehand.
  • Unpaid resident tax can affect the review; pay it on time.
  • False statements can lead to denial or revocation of your status.

FAQ

Q: What if my period of stay has already expired? Consult your Regional Immigration Bureau immediately. Overstaying without a valid reason makes you an illegal resident and can lead to deportation and re-entry bans.

Q: Can I travel abroad during the review? Leaving Japan during the review may cause your application to be treated as withdrawn. Always check with the bureau before traveling.

Q: Can anyone use the online application? It is available if you meet certain statuses and conditions, and you must register your user information in advance.
